Arcata Bay is part of the larger Humboldt Bay, located about 100 miles south of the Oregon border in Northern California. Freshwater Slough lies within Arcata Bay on the lower eastern side. This wetland area is a prime destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse array of avian species that call Freshwater Slough home. Birding is particularly rewarding during the winter months, when a greater number of species can be observed. However, visitors are likely to spot plenty of birds year-round, depending on the specific area explored.

The waters of Humboldt and Arcata Bays, including their tidal sloughs, are open to fishing throughout the year. While the Pacific and California halibut are found in the bay, they do not inhabit Freshwater Slough. Kayak anglers commonly pursue species like perch, halibut, bat rays, and salmon, with the incoming tide about two hours before high tide offering the best fishing.

After a day of outdoor activities like kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding, visitors can explore the charming town of Arcata or hike the Arcata Ridge Trail. Though smaller in size, Freshwater Slough still provides excellent fishing and paddling opportunities for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
