This sprawling reservoir offers a wide variety of water-based recreational activities, including fishing, boating, swimming, jet skiing, waterskiing, sailing, and windsurfing. However, paddlers should exercise caution due to the dangerously strong winds, vast distances between shorelines, and the reservoir's 65 miles of shoreline.

The most picturesque arms are situated close to the Dinosaur Point Road boat launch on the northwestern shore, rendering them ideal for beginner paddlers. All watercraft, including kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards, are required to navigate in a counterclockwise manner.

The Romero Visitors Center operates daily, with the exception of Wednesdays and Thursdays.

San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area is renowned for its boating, board sailing, camping, and picnicking opportunities. It is particularly popular with kayak anglers, who are drawn to the reservoir's abundant striped bass and catfish, which provide excellent fishing, especially in the spring and summer.
