Canoeing Castaic AFterbay Lagoon

Castaic Afterbay Lagoon is located 7 miles north of Magic Mountain Amusement Park and 14 miles south of Pyramid Lake, making it an easily accessible destination. The well-maintained lagoon is ideal for novice paddlers or those seeking a peaceful afternoon on the water. The shaded, grassy picnic area and sandy beach provide a perfect setting for a family barbecue or a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

The East Side Lagoon offers 24-hour pier fishing, with shoreline access available only from the east side. The two-lane launch ramp accommodates a variety of watercraft, including canoes, sailboats, kayaks, float tubes, and vessels with trolling motors. The western side of the lagoon features a summer swim beach and a large picnic area, as well as hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.

In contrast to Castaic Lake, which prohibits swimming, the lagoon allows swimming in designated areas when lifeguards are on duty, typically from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. Jet skis and powerboats, with the exception of those with electric motors, are not permitted on the lagoon.

Castaic Afterbay Lagoon is a popular destination for kayak anglers, with the record bass weighing in at a remarkable 17 pounds. Although Castaic Lake can be subject to strong winds, the lagoon's position behind the dam provides a sheltered environment, making it an ideal spot for novice paddlers to enjoy a peaceful and enjoyable experience.
