The low-elevation Woodward Reservoir, situated in a flat grassy meadow, shares a similar terrain with Modesto Reservoir and Turlock Lake. It is my favorite of the three locations because it offers tree-shaded campsites overlooking the water, minimal boat traffic, and three boat launches that allow you to explore different sections of the reservoir by paddling.

The boat launch near Sailboat Cove is the best option for novice paddlers. The eastern arm is about ten miles long and can be easily crossed at its narrowest point. Additionally, most of this arm has a 5 mph speed limit for boats.

When the reservoir is at full capacity, its perimeter measures around 23 miles. Kayaks and canoes must stay within 200 feet of the shoreline at all times.

Despite its rather unattractive appearance, Woodward Reservoir can get surprisingly crowded, especially during the hot summer months. The main draws are paddling activities like canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding, as well as fishing, wakeboarding, and waterskiing.
